What to Do After Water Damage
The first minutes after water damage are about preventing additional harm without creating a safety risk. Use these steps as a general guide, then adapt them to the source of the water and conditions in the property.
1. Check for immediate hazards
Do not walk into standing water if electrical equipment, outlets, or wiring may be involved. Leave unsafe areas alone and use emergency services when a life-safety hazard exists.
2. Stop the water source when safe
For a plumbing leak, shut off the affected fixture or main water supply if you can do so safely. Exterior flooding, roof leaks, and sewer backups may require a different response.
3. Identify the type of water
A clean supply-line leak should not be treated the same way as sewage or outside floodwater. If contamination is possible, limit contact and tell the cleanup provider what the source appears to be.
4. Document what happened
Photos and notes can help you remember affected rooms, materials, and the apparent cause. For an insurance claim, follow your insurer's instructions rather than relying on a restoration website for coverage decisions.
5. Remove water and begin drying
For more than a minor spill, water extraction and structural drying may be appropriate. EPA guidance emphasizes drying water-damaged areas and items within 24–48 hours when possible to help prevent mold growth.
